Ahhh… freshly baked bread. Nothing compares to its aroma as it wafts through the air.
Bread is so very basic. The baked mixture of flour and water is a dietary staple throughout the world. People grind all kinds of grains, beans, seeds, and roots into the powdery flour as the base ingredient. The dough then magnificently becomes the muffins, tortillas, sourdough, scones, and flatbread that we love.
Although many of us have a more varied diet today, bread continues to hold a foundational place in our daily nourishment. We butter it, toast it, broil it, dip it, fry it, and make it into every kind of sandwich imaginable.
Bread of Life
Jesus, along with the Biblical writers, used bread to illustrate our most essential need in life: our relationship with God. The vital and daily role of bread is analogous to our 24-7 dependence on Him. Our love for God manifests in the way we respond in this divine yoke.
Our heart condition is revealed as we satisfy our cravings. Sometimes we appease the hunger with a job promotion, our children’s accomplishments, or new stylish clothes. We can amass huge volumes of stuff as a solution to satisfying desires. Their nourishment, however, is only temporary. The job grows mundane, our children struggle, and moths munch.
Our soul’s sustenance is in God alone. Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hunger…I am the bread that came down from heaven.” (John 6:35, 41) We need no further spiritual supplements from worldly philosophies and man-made doctrines.
The spiritual bread for our famished human soul is Jesus Christ. He alone satisfies our yearnings.
What bread is in your diet?
We come to the Lord for sustenance in several ways. Just as we need our daily bread, so we need Jesus in our lives day after day. Reaching for Him regularly through prayer, studying His letters (the Bible), trusting in Him (faith), and being with His people (the church) will satisfy our spiritual hunger.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. (Matthew 5:6)
Bread. Daily. Jesus.
